Although we all like to believe that anyone accused of a crime has the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a court of law, that isn’t necessarily true. Certain crimes, especially those which allege sexual abuse, molestation or battery, ... Teach Your Teen A Skill BY Susan Levine What will your teenager be doing this summer? Going with you and the family on a long-awaited vacation? Working at a summer job until September? Just hanging out at home because he’s not legally old enough to get a job? Same sex marriages? Live and Let Die? My mother and step-father called me the other night to tell me that they were making out their wills. The single question she asked of them was: "If you had it to do over again, would you still have children?" A surprising 70% said "no." Although the survey was hardly scientific – she didn’t claim that it was – it was still a strong indication that more couples regret being parents than some of us like to believe. Mo' Money, Mo' Problems Mo' Money, Mo' Problems According to a recent article I read by Gregg Easterbrook, The Real Truth About Money, “research has shown that there is no significant relationship between how much money a person earns and whether he or she feels good about life.” The Seven Joys of Secularism The Seven Joys of Secularism It’s impossible to count how many times secularists are told by religious folk of various faiths that we will regret our "godless" or "sinful" life sooner or later. Although I can’t speak for everyone, I can honestly report that this secular writer hasn’t experienced any regrets for my decision to trade in the unhappiness of traditional Catholicism for the joys of secularism. Since no regrets have surfaced in more than the twenty years that have elapsed since making the secular choice, it’s rather doubtful that they will surface any time in the near or distant future. Not a fan of Christmas Not a fan of Christmas As a person who works in the retail industry, I await Christmas with a feeling of dread. Many sources state that businesses, especially small retail stores, receive as much as 33-50% of their profits for the year. Involved in a new business venture, I can only hope the next month makes up for several months of unsatisfactory sales. On a personal level, I am not a fan of Christmas. Thinking 'Too Much'; It's NOT A Bad Thing Thinking 'Too Much'; It's NOT A Bad Thing There are those who say we tend to think too much before making important decisions. I disagree. Judging from the results of bad personal decisions we often read about in the news, such as nasty divorces and child abuse or homicide cases, my feeling is that we dont think enough. Sexual Opinions and Values Sexual Opinions and Values Too many couples fail to address important sexual issues that may be troubling them before deciding to get married. What Do We Call Ourselves? What Do We Call Ourselves? In 1970, along with hundreds and thousands others I was born into a mixed race family. Despite my parents efforts to give me a liberal upbringing and raise me to believe there was no difference between black or white, or the numerous shades in between, and despite the fact that in the 1990 Census report, 6.8 million Americas stated that they considered themselves multi-racial, and that only ten years ago there were 1.1million interracial couples living in the United States, did experience prejudice, often from the most unexpected quarters.
