What are your daughters watching?
Since the invention of the television American children have glued their eyes to images of men and women that they were programmed to aspire to be like. Each image constructed of societal rules, regulations, and norms that depicted a gendered role for both males and females. As societies views on women and the roles that they played expanded so have the female images that were represented by the animated screen. American girls have watched their female cartoon role models evolve from Betty Boop to Olive Oyl, from Olive Oyl to She-Ra and the Power Puff girls.

Recently, I have had the privilege to sign up for a class entitled “Psychology of Women. “ I thought that maybe after taking this class I would get a better idea of why people, particularly women, think the way they do. But what I have really started learning is the way that society views women. I have also learned how women view other women. Some of it is more than disturbing. |
