Why not see the end of Friends as an excellent time to change a little on TV? I think we need to move on from the dusty old ideas of tv, and do some more challenging, interesting, and fresh prime-time TV.

I think the end of Friends may make many beginnings. I'm sure all the die hard fans of Friends will miss the show and wish it back, but now that it's gone, it opens up a golden opportunity for something new and fresh. This is a great thing. My personal tastes run a different way to the traditional sitcom, where everyone's beautiful and everything they say is very polished humour.

In my opinion, there are already plenty of crime shows. This genre of television has been done enough. Overkill is the word that comes to my mind. And then there is reality TV. Who cares what the "reality" of the show is? Just keep the gay guys and I'll be happy. And the do-it-yourself network has had its day, really. What we need is something completely different.

The time for change is imminent. People want to escape a little, and not be dished up the same ole' every night. See if those old dusty TV executives could do better than the following suggestions:

    1. There are several ways we could go here. Adult animation in Western society has been dominated by humour but what about serious animation, dare I say it, anime in a prime-time slot? A season of Ghost in the Shell, but as a TV series- Guyver, or Bubble Gum Crisis, for example. Let the world of adult animation become a genre that is taken more seriously. Or, better yet, make a new animated series for adults based on Western tradition with a serious side. Neil Gaiman's Sandman, as an animated serial, would be to die for!

    2. Now we've seen the end of Buffy and Angel (unfortunately) what about something of taste that's new? I think others in a similar vein like Charmed and Dark Angel are lacking what in this genre are we left with? Nothing. I would like nothing better than to see a series based on the myths of the world in a good way. The story is tied together by a character who watches the world's history- proven or otherwise- as if he is watching a movie. He intervenes from time to time but has 'allowed' some nasty atrocities to occur. Or maybe just another series about the future of a contemporary cult hero who is plagued by self-doubt and past sins.

    3. The time slot could be dedicated to short films that would normally be only shown in film festivals, but, in a forum where it is judged by decent critics like Tarantino, James Cameron, and Peter Jackson, as well as a stand-in celebrity who changes weekly. The overall grand prize could be to write and direct a film that would be funded by the industry.

Imagine the amount of talent that could be sifted through in such a way. If one can make a good story great on a shoe string budget, imagine what talent one must possess! (I would hope they are after talent, rather than to protect their wilting assets). It could possibly include two streams fiction and documentaries/mockumentaries.

These are just several suggestions for a medium that could be so good with a little tweaking. I'm sure there are more, maybe people could send in suggestions. Right now TV pretty much sucks.

But what if TV could be really good?

It certainly has the potential to be.
