A US teenager is facing charges of burglary and theft after holding a rabbit ransom for $100.

The 17-year-old from Portland is accused of breaking and entering a friend's apartment and making off with a pet grey pygmy bunny. He then phoned the owner and demanded a ransom of $100 otherwise he would harm the animal.

Police Lieutenant Tony Ward said officers recovered the rabbit in good condition, and the teenager now faces charges of burglary and theft in connection with the break-in.

The juvenile, who is being held at a local youth development centre, also faces unrelated charges of robbery, assault and terrorising.
