6430 Police Deployed for Pope John Paul II Funeral

The security in Rome for the funeral of Pope John Paul II will be attended by 6430 police. 5000 police will be on duty in charge of public security and the balance protecting the monachs. Many world leaders are expected to attend and an estimated two million people. 

The Vatican will announce today the exact day of the funeral, which will take place at St. Peter's Basilica.  It will also be shown on outdoor screens in St Peter's Square.

Airports have tightened security and the airspace over Rome will be closed completely on the day of the funeral, with defence forces enforcing the ban.  Airport and train station surveillance has been increased throughout Italy.

It is reported by US media that President Bush may attend the funeral. This would make him the first U.S. President to attend a pope's funeral.
