Global Food Security Index, commissioned by world-class science and engineering company DuPont, was launched on July 10th by the EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit).

The world population, according to estimates by the United Nations Population Fund, exceeded 7 billion on October 31, 2011. Considering the fact that in 1974 it reached just 4 billion, the world's population is growing with tremendous speeds. And to manage the growth, certain steps are needed. And the Global Food Security Index is definitely a step in the right direction.

It addresses the underlying factors of food insecurity in 105 countries and shows where improvements and reforms are needed.

DuPont Chair and CEO Ellen Kullman says that common food security metrics are required to increase global food security. "We've always known that what gets measured, gets done," she added.

While countries around the world share the common goal, until today they did not share a common language. This new Index brings the world a common way to measure food security.
