I would like to propose that religious beliefs be placed in the DSM as a category of mental illness for the following reasons:
(1) Hallucinations - the person has invisible friends who (s)he insists are real, and to whom (s)he speaks daily, even though nobody can actually see or hear
these friends.
(2) Delusions - the patient believes that the invisible friends have magical powers to make them rich, cure cancer, bring about world peace, and will do so eventually if asked.
(3) Denial/Inability to learn - though the requests for world peace remain unanswered, even after hundreds of years, the patients persist with the praying behaviour, each time expecting different results.
(4) Inability to distinguish fantasy from reality - the beliefs are contingent upon ancient mythology being accepted as historical fact.
(5) Paranoia - the belief that anyone who does not share their supernatural concept of reality is "evil," "the devil," "an agent of Satan".
(6) Emotional abuse - religious concepts such as sin, hell, cause feelings of guilt, shame, fear, and other types of emotional "baggage" which can scar the
psyche for life.
(7) Violence - many patients insist that others should share in their delusions, even to the extent of using violence.
Factzone: The truth about Kim Jong Il Kim Jong Il, the leader of the free world, has decided to move on to more fertile grounds, leaving with us just the memories of 8-color rainbows, singing Korean women and couple of nuclear weapons. But who was this man whose next ambition would have been to get the next Nobel Peace prize? Here are just a few facts you should know about.

religion CAN be a mental illness if taken to the extreme ie every other sentence that comes out of the infflicteds mouth contains a reference to god or jesus.as if they were brainwashed zombies controlled by invisible entities.
I think that kind of sums it up so I'll stop there.

I think you could probably believe anything you want as long as you keep it to yourselves. You could do what you want as long as it doesn't hurt others. We probably wouldn't even think you were crazy if you didn't talk about it so much. It's just that you won't stop trying to change other people. That's why it's mentally ill.

I see where your coming from and it certainly looks that way, but if you might have noticed that Pope John Paul II was credited for helping to end the Cold War. Catholicism has placed millions of orphanages, schools, missionaries, food banks, charities, and other things to communities that are both needy and not needy. Many of the wars that claim the lives of millions were started yes by using religion as a reason to invade or terrorize others. The key though, is that it was in the people's hearts already to kill whether they were going to use religion or find some other reason. Don't blindly hate, for you'll only look for every possible thing that could be interpreted as wrong while ignoring context, logic, and all the good things a people have done.

I just wanna post a quick comment on your statement about Science disproving religion. What has science proven if not for the fact that there are infinity questions hidden within every other question?
Every time a question is posed, science has worked to answer it. Where are your answers? Whats the human body made of? Cells! But what are cells made of? Molecules! But what are molecules made of? Atoms! Then quarks and now what?
Sure I find the idea of creationism and some of the biblical stories to be a bit crazy but I personally see the Bible as full of truth provided you don't take it literally. Just because Science has an idea of how the earth was made doesn't mean the bible is 100% false and therefore there is no God. Amidst all the questions brought by science, the idea of a God looks to me the only plausible reason that any of these scientific discoveries exist.
Just because MY senses don't immediately pick up a higher power doesn't mean its not there. Try explaining the beauty of a garden to an ant and then one might get an idea of what its like to explain God to a human. Its almost a hunch, you just know somethings gotta be out there... Do you believe in love? You see it through other people who've experienced it. If you shut yourself out from it, you'll never understand...
Sorry for the length on a small portion of the article, I like to rant a lot!
Mr. Smart says on 2010-01-06 12:16:05 about religion and psychosis
religion really is a form of mental illness
to Wisdom:
about 1.
"1. The limited capacity of believing in things that are only visible and audible is a non-believer feature. For example they do not believe in radio ways, air, love, affection because they cannot see them.
"
non-believer is basing not on faith but on KNOWLEDGE (a faith is inadmissible from the scientific point of view)
existing of radio waves isn't so sure - but exist darkened by the x-radiation plates, religion doesn't dispose such evidence, love and affection you can see by behavior, and non-believer admit that air exist but if God has such nature as air would not be able even to fart, say nothing of speaking or thinking (how weak must be religion if it has to compare its god to things which existence is most uncertain ?)
about 4.
"Mythology might seem to be great fun but...The belief in it is a historical fact!"
tuberculosis is also a historical fact and it is an illness
to gravity:
1.
"Religious people hardly ever have hallucinations"
it is STUPID, religious people have hallucinations almost all the time
2.
"you'd find a lot of people who believe in ghosts"
not believe in ghosts but believe that such ghosts can change many things in somebody's life and can influence strongly conditions in the country, world or town
3. "Denial/Inability to learn:"
religious people are unusually stupid

Wisdom says on 2009-10-10 08:02:50 about religion is a mental illness
1. The limited capacity of believing in things that are only visible and audible is a non-believer feature. For example they do not believe in radio ways, air, love, affection because they cannot see them.
2. A true believer does not rely on the Creator if he has cancer and a microwave in the kitchen, war comes through human not God, so a true believer cannot expect God to finish war.
3. Praying is presenting gratitudes and wishes. It is not a contract. It is therapy like many of non-believer satisfy themselves at yoga, plates classes. Non-believers cannot suggest an idea about prayers and their becoming true because they do not pray. People worship in different ways since thousands of years and they will do. Believers know to what extent their prayers come true. God is not responsible from Bristish and american soldiers in middle east.
4. Mythology might seem to be great fun to non-believers but it was a religion like many others. The belief in it is a historical fact! There are hundreds of people studying it!.
5. Religion is not a 21 century individualist leisure time activity. It sets up rules for trade, family, sex, war and so on. The ones who are able to understand and adjust its rules properly (which does not happen nowadays) gain relative peace and sustainability for again human beings. The Creator does not need your prayers, sacrifice. Everything commaned by religions (most of them ) are for a better life for humans not God. !
5. The abundance of fear, shame and guilt results in crime. Human beings are not capable of control themselves unless there is an authority. "Lord of Flies" read it!
6. Forcing people to do things is a human attitude. For example, non-believers keep posting videos and notes on internet to convert others to their "religion" which is "not-believer". However, since they cannot see it, they do not believe it !
gravity says on 2009-10-10 06:53:49 about this crap
This is stupid.
1. Hallucinations: Religious people hardly ever have hallucinations - that is actually seeing or hearing things - instead they often refer to communication with a deity as a sort of inner dialogue or through their 'hearts' (which can just as easily be understood as 'inner dialogue').
2. Delusions: If you classified everybody who has delusions as insane, you'd find a lot of people who believe in ghosts (and the plethora of other superstitious beliefs people have) are suddenly insane too. Silly beliefs ≠Insanity.
3. Denial/Inability to learn: This is compartmentalization caused by stubbornness, and does not apply generally to religious people (yes, there are lots of open-minded religious people). Again, something very common in religious and non-religious alike.
4. Inability to distinguish fantasy from reality: Sure, if a religious person was actually building an ark and jamming every animal they could into it, I'd call that insane. But most aren't, and claiming they're insane because they believe the weird things in ancient texts isn't a very good argument. For one, they are more willing to stretch their plausibility beyond us - that's not insanity. It might be gullibility, ignorance, or stupidity - not insanity. If you are to call that insane, you are to call every person who believed in a mythological history is insane. Good luck convincing the DSM there, buddy.
5. Paranoia: I don't think very many religious people will call me an agent of Satan for expressing my disagreements with religion. This is a very limited view of 'religious people' and it's no good to make a hasty generalization based on the entire population of religious people based on a small subset. Even then, I can think of a better explanation for it other than 'paranoia.'
6. Emotional abuse: Hey, I agree that some religions can inflict emotional abuse on somebody, especially the ascetic religions. But emotional abuse is not a qualifier for mental illness. Lots of people were emotionally abused and are not mentally ill.
7. Violence: Oh, please. Yes, everybody who is religious is willing to shoot you right in the head for being a heathen. Keep telling yourself that, if it helps you feel better about you not being a Christian.
This is one of the stupidest arguments I've seen. I can only imagine insecure atheists with a chip on their shoulder, who consistently confuse the words 'religion' and 'Evangelical Christianity,' can ever actually agree with this trite nonsense. "LOL RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ARE MENTALLY ILL" (none of these people have probably ever cracked open a DSM or read anything about psychology). We really are not this dumb, as atheists, are we? Can we please be rational about this and look at religion for what it really is instead of pleasing our egos while completely missing anything of substance?

have anyone thought how day and night have been passing in the most perfect way ever since the world has begun? have anyone thought of how we came to life, did the so called mother nature cause this to happen, if what is mother nature & where does it exist. Its only god & only one god who can create a huge universe & its perfect cycle & god created us humans and we never give time to ealize and understand it. All we do is we use our stupid ego to deny this great fact. God created us and only thing we do is create violence, destructing peace. So who ever doesnt beleive and understand it writes shit like the above. god has alos revealed us the way to live and its called religion.
Henk says on 2009-10-10 04:55:12 about religion
Religions have nothing to do with faith, morality, ethic or otherwise. It has all to do with power of the few over many.
It always amazes me how otherwise perfectly intelligent people are hood-winked by men wearing froks and that churches appear to have way too much sway over independent thinking.
In short. There never was a god, there is no god and there never will be one and the sooner people start to realise those fact, the sooner we will all be living in a more peaceful world.

I would agree with your opinion when religion is taken to the point of fanatism like american right wing crazy people or some form of extra radical muslims like al-qaeda, but a little God in someone's life could help with the burden of day to day things, besides... Anything that encourages to be a better person should be considered

I fully agree with your comments but I would go further and say that religion is one of the biggest problems faced by society today.Name me a war past or present that wasn't caused by religion or nationalism.I think it is time that non believers made their views known and tried to reverse this worrying trend
