The Royal Trophy golf tournament has been postponed following the death of Thailand's Princess Galyani Vadhana.
The Thai government asked organisers of the annual competition between Europe and Asia - which was to be staged in Bangkok between January 11-13 - to delay the event as a mark of respect to the late princess, who passed away on Wednesday (02.01.08).
Golf stars Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley and David Howell were all set to represent Europe for the tournament at the Amata Springs Country Club.
The event is now in its third year, with the European team, captained by golf hero Seve Ballesteros, being victorious for the past two years.
Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of Thai King Bhumibol, died on Wednesday (02.01.08) following a long battle with abdominal cancer.
She was famous for her extensive interest in the arts, especially theatre and classical music, an interest she pursued while living in Switzerland.
The princess, who spoke five languages, wrote books about her love of travelling.
She gave up the royal title she was awarded in 1935 when she married royal aide Colonel Aram Ratanakul Serireungriddhi in 1944 because of his lower-class status.
The couple had a daughter but divorced in 1949, when the princess' royal title was restored by her brother Bhumibol.
She married again in 1969 to professional pilot Prince Varananda Dhavaj who died in 1990.
