Nepal's King Gyanendra has been given 15 days to leave his Kathmandu palace following the abolishment of the country's monarchy on Wednesday (28.05.08).
The 61-year-old king will be removed from the pink concrete royal residence by force if he refuses to leave by the set date.
However, other people in the country were celebrating after the constituent assembly voted to banish royal rule.
Prime Minister Girjia Prasad Koirala said: "We have entered a new era today. Nepal's rebirth as a republic is the dream of the whole nation."
Nepalese people celebrated the decision in the streets when the royal flag at the palace was lowered. Authorities confirmed the royal standard flag will be replaced by a national flag.
University student Dev Raj Bhatta, who was sitting outside the palace gate, said: "I feel really honoured. The end of the monarchy has made me a proud Nepali citizen."
