Aussie Adrian Avenell, of Devonport, needs 438,000 cigarette butts to make a sculpture for an anti-smoking project and he wants Tasmania's smokers to help him.

The project comprises of - a 4.5 metre-long, 1.8 metre-wide section of pavement and gutter covered with cigarette butts. Plus a coffin made of fag ends.

The former top Sydney chef carved buffet centrepieces and worked in other mediums before the idea for the cigarette "installation" dawned on him recently.

Avenell said that the concept deserves a government grant and/or sponsorship from the anti-smoking lobby.

"I'm hoping to collect 438,000 cigarette butts because if a man smokes 30 cigarettes a day, over a year that's 10,950 butts," News.com.au quoted him, as saying.

"And if he started smoking when he was 20 and died at 60 because of a smoking-related disease - that's a 40-year life span.

"So, you multiply that by 10,900 and that gives 438,000 cigarettes," he added.

Avenell said so far he has 20 cigarette butts.

"I don't personally collect them," he explained.

Avenell smokes butt-less roll-your-owns, 10 per day down from a 60 per day habit.

The longest he's gone without a smoke in 35 years is 60 days, he said.

Avenell said he has checked with Australia Post and they say it's OK for people to mail butts to his Devonport home.

All they have to do is place the butts in a seal able plastic bag and place that bag inside a box, he said.

He has yet to receive any butts thorough the post. (ANI)
