London, May 12 : Dog lovers are dishing out up to 31,000 pounds to look after their pet canines over its lifetime, according to a new survey.

Dog lovers are dishing out up to 31,000 pounds to look after their pet canines over its lifetime, according to a new survey.

The survey, of 3000 dogs owners, revealed that the cost of buying the pet, followed by vet bills, food, grooming, kennels and insurance all add up to an average of 31,000 pounds over its lifetime or 45 pounds in a week.

The most expensive pooch is the Chihuahua with an estimated 88,691 pounds being spent on it during its 13-year average life.

Then follows the greyhound with a lifetime bill of 82,797 pounds and the mastiff taking up the third spot with 81,619 pounds.

The boxer landed at the fourth place with an average cost of 49,896 pounds, followed by the English Setter at fifth with an average cost of 49,548 pounds.

The sixth place went to doberman pinscher at 49,304 pounds followed by golden retriever 48,442 pounds, poodle 45,852 pounds, dalmatian 44,383 pounds and Great Dane at 41,661 pounds.

For some the cost is even higher as more than 20 per cent own more than one dog

"Today's pets are treated more like members of the family and this new attitude is reflected in the amount owners spend on their pet's lifestyle," The Sun quoted a spokesman for the poll, as saying. (ANI)
