Srinagar city's police chief S Mujtaba, who was leading an operation against militants, escaped unhurt when rebels rained heavy fire on his vehicle, officials said.
"We have killed Faisal, the divisional commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba," Mujtaba told reporters near the scene of fighting outside the city.
"We lost four policemen during the encounter (gun battle)," he said, adding that his police guard was also killed when Faisal ran out of his hide-out and started firing.SSP srinagar said Faisal's killing was a "big setback" for Lashkar.
