Denmark's Queen Margrethe was welcomed by the Mexican President when she arrived in the South American country yesterday (18.02.08).

Margrethe - who has been joined by her husband Prince-Consort Henrik on the state visit - was greeted by Felipe Calderón as part of the trip which will highlight cultural projects the two countries are working on together.

Margrethe and Henrik's visit is in return for Calderón's earlier trip to Denmark.

While he was there, he invited Queen Margrethe to conduct a state visit to Mexico, "which would confirm the new stage in bilateral relations that will be characterized by greater intensity and cooperation in various spheres".

Calderón also hailed Denmark as Mexico's largest investor among the Nordic countries.

He highlighted the participation of major Danish firms in Mexico such as Maersk, Grundfos, Lego, Danisco, Novo Nordisk, FL Smidth and Danfoss.

Mexico's oldest treaty with any European country is the Treaty of Friendship, Trade and Navigation with Denmark.
