  Srinagar, March 15: World’s oldest chinar, National Tree of Kashmir, got life long company today when a sapling of the same tree was planted under its shadow. A Chinar plantation drive was started today, by the Chief Minister of State, which will continue for many days and thousands of saplings will be planted. Kashmir is the home of 40,000 Chinar trees which are spread over length and breadth of this Himalayan state. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad launched the drive formally today morning when he planted many saplings of Chinar along foreshore road and in the campus of Kashmir University, which has hundreds of big Chinars giving it a beautiful look. Calling the Chinar tree as the “identity of Kashmir”, Azad said that the (Chinar) tree should be protected and more and more saplings should be planted by one and all. Official sources said that the plantation was also carried in the other districts of the Kashmir Valley. Noted environmentalist M.S.Wadoo and District Development Commissioner of central Budgam District Mr.Farooq Ahmad planted a sapling in Chattergam village which has the privilege of having the world's oldest Chinar."The sapling was planted under the shadows of the historical and the world's oldest Chinar", an official said. The oldest chinar , which was discovered, last year, by M.S.Wadoo after 30 years of rigorous research, has been planted in 1374 AD and presently stands at 31.85 meters of girth at ground level and 14.37 meters at breadth height.
