R Romain Pizzi says Prozac is now being given to lonely animals whose owners leave them alone for hours on end, with tropical birds such as parrots some of the worst affected.
  He said: "Typically if people go out to work all day their parrot will get very bored and frustrated and eventually develop depression. In the most extreme cases Prozac will be prescribed. It doesn't cure all animals but around two-thirds respond to the treatment." Recent research also claimed 632,000 cats and dogs across the UK suffer from depression.
