I Islamabad, Jan 12 : Expressing concern over security of opposition leader in Pakistan, a US Congressman has urged President George W Bush to call for a UN investigation into the assassination of ex-premier Benazir Bhutto.
  "Providing adequate protection for opposition leaders, and undertaking an international and independent investigation into Benazir Bhutto assassination, are essential steps to ensuring free and fair elections, the restoration of democracy in Pakistan, and the stability of the country and of the region," US Congressman Bruce L. Braley wrote in a letter to Bush. He said that the assassination of Benazir was a "stark evidence that the security provided by the Pakistani Government for opposition leaders is insufficient and must be significantly enhanced." "It is critical at this time that you (Bush) work to ensure that security is appropriately enhanced for Asif Ali Zardari, Imran Khan, Nawaz Sharif, and for all opposition leaders so that they are not in danger of similar attacks," Braley added. He has requested Bush to "make available any and all appropriate US assistance, including the assistance of US investigative teams, to help ensure that any investigation is comprehensive, impartial and credible," Expressing his happiness over the Scotland Yard's involvement into Benazir's assassination probe, he said, "It troubles me that the United States remains inactive on this issue." In November 2007, Braley had also written to Bush "encouraging him and his administration to convince Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to lift the state of emergency in Pakistan, restore the constitution and freedom of the press, and secure the release of political prisoners."
