Noted Pakistani lawyer and chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Asma Jahangir arrived here Friday for a daylong visit. Immediately on her arrival here, she met the Peoples Conference (PC) chairman Sajad Lone at his residence. Jahangir is scheduled to meet the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik and other separatist leaders here.

During her stay in Srinagar, Jahangir will also meet the chairman of the state Human Rights Commission.

She is also scheduled to meet senior Congress leader and Social Welfare Minister Abdul Gani Vakil.

Jahangir, who is visiting the state as a UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Faith, met Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in winter capital Jammu Friday morning.

During her meeting with the chief minister, Jahangir stressed the need for carrying forward the peace process and confidence-building measures, saying it was “in the best interests of the people of the sub-continent”.

Azad told Jahangir that he was “hopeful that the new government would carry forward the peace process initiated by India and Pakistan about four years back”.
