The ’99 Problems’ rapper is now the hot favourite to top the bill of the world famous music event after organiser Michael Eavis revealed his “black American headliner” hails from Jay-Z’s hometown of New York.

Eavis said: “If you want me to narrow it down for you a bit more I can reveal that the headline act is a big American artist from New York.”

Although Jay-Z – who has previously dubbed himself the ‘King of New York’ – is the frontrunner for one of the weekend’s headline slots, big names 50 Cent and Alicia Keys also hail from the Big Apple.

Eavis’ latest cryptic statement rules out Kanye West, who hails from Chicago and Houston-born Beyoncé Knowles.

Other acts rumoured to join the trio of headliners at this year’s Glastonbury - which runs from June 27-29 – include Led Zeppelin, Kylie Minogue, Coldplay and Radiohead.

Eavis said of Kylie – who was set to headline the 2005 festival but was forced to pull out after she was diagnosed with breast cancer: “I’d love to see Kylie Minogue perform on the last night.

“Kylie sums up everything Glastonbury is about. She's glamorous and theatrical. I see dancers, lights, feathers - almost like a circus show.”
