R.E.M., Manu Chao, Mika, Ben Harper, Massive Attack, Vanessa Paradis, Cali, Justice, Alain Bashung, Etienne Daho, The Hives, Dionysos: some of the tried and tested artists on offer at Paléo Festival 2008. This 33rd edition, which sees the inauguration of a new stage dedicated to young new talent, looks like being particularly rich in discoveries. For six days, Brazil will be displaying its musical fusion at the Dôme and its cultural contrasts in the Village du Monde. Tickets and passes go on sale at midday on Wednesday 16th April (preferential tariffs apply until 30th April) on www.paleo.ch and at the usual sales outlets.

The organisers of Paléo Festival this morning revealed the 2008 line-up: a cohort of bill-topping stars, accompanied by a host of new talent that has never been better represented on the Festival’s stages. Let’s take a brief look at this 33rd edition: Northern Rock!

According to the Festival’s programmers, who spend most of the year going to and fro between festivals, there has never been such a flourishing of quality new talent. So much so that making choices has become arduous, particularly on the effervescent rock music scene. This year, many of its representatives have arrived from Northern Europe and Canada; amongst them the latest English Indie-rock sensation, Pete and the Pirates, the psychedelic Franco-Finnish pop duo The DØ, the delicate creativity of the Canadian Patrick Watson and the electro pop of Caribou. But also, all the way form Brighton, the wild mixed duo Blood Red Shoes, the chiming guitars of the Danish group The Kissaway Trail and the Swedes of I'm From Barcelona with their pop standards. From our Belgian cousins come the muted ambiances of Girls in Hawaii, the explosive electrorock of the Flemish band Goose and the experimental genius of dEUS, all for our immense listening pleasure.

Among the young talents of French chanson let’s give a mention to Alexandre Kinn and his urban folk, the velvety and sometimes hoarse voice of Constance Verluca, the new young singer-songwriter-performer Ours and that gypsy jazz fanatic Thomas Dutronc.

Swiss artists will also be strutting their stuff. Present on all the Festival’s stages, they can be found along side the greatest names of the moment, as with K and Favez, both of whom are lining up on the Grande Scène. Or take Moonraisers, a group from Neuchâtel, who will be playing under the Chapiteau.

From African airs to classical music On Thursday 24th July some airs of Africa, with the Nigerian pop of Asa, the Ivorian reggae of Tiken Jah Fakoly and the hip-hop variations of Afro-beat from Seun Kuti. On Friday 25th July, pride of place to hip hop/trip hop and the founding fathers of Massive Attack, the underground rap of Keny Arkana from Marseille, the hard-hitting style of IAM and the now uncontested king of slam, Grand Corps Malade. Finally, the traditional classical music concert will take place on Sunday 27th July with the romanticism of Felix Mendelssohn, interpreted by L'Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, led by the virtuoso violinist Gilles Apap.

A Village du Monde high in contrasts With its fusion of African, Amazonian, black American and European sounds, Brazilian music will be the guest of honour this year at the Dôme. Pride of place to the Brazilian version of Buena Vista Social Club, the Siba e a Fuloresta, to the cries of protest of youth in revolt with the hip-hop of Marcelo D2 and the samba-reggae of Olodum. The Odyssey of crossovers continues with the drum'n'bass of DJ Dolores, the club ambiance of DJ Sandrinho the mixed rhythms of Ramiro Musotto and the Creole expression of the singer from Cap Verde, Mayra Andrade.

New at the 2008 edition
The Crique has moved to another part of the site and has been renamed La Ruche (The Hive), a new greenfield setting for street artists. Le Détour, a special stage dedicated to new talent emerging from the Swiss music scene will be installed on the main Festival site.

Tickets and passes are on sale from midday on Thursday 16th April (preferential tariffs available until 30th April) on www.paleo.ch as well as at usual sales outlets.
