"Multi-National Division North Soldiers discovered between 20 30 bodies buried in a mass grave south of Muqdadiya, Iraq, April 13," according to the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq Voices of Iraq (VOI).
"All the bodies were badly decomposed and appear to have been at the site nearly eight months. The Coalition forces were unable to determine whether or not the bodies had been tortured at the time of death."
The remains will be moved to a nearby cemetery, the U.S. statement read.
Late last March, the U.S. army said it found a mass grave with 14 bodies in northern Muqdadiya, Diala province.
A U.S. army statement then read that some of the bodies showed signs of having been tortured and remained in that site for a period of 2-6 months. That site happened to be 100 meters north of another mass grave with 37 bodies discovered a couple of days earlier.
According to the statement, the areas where these mass graves were found have been under the al-Qaeda network's control before the U.S. forces expelled them within a security campaign launched jointly between the U.S. and Iraqi armies on November 27, 2007 in Diala with the aim of tracking down al-Qaeda operatives in the province and improving security conditions there.
Baaquba, the capital of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
