Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit has cancelled her official three-day trip to Chile because of "acute stomach flu".
The princess was due to accompany her husband, Crown Prince Haakon, on a flight to Santiago via Paris, in France, yesterday (22.01.08), but palace officials announced the royal was unable to fulfil her obligations due to her ill health.
Palace spokeswoman Astrid Verstro said yesterday: "Princess Mette-Marit has omgangssyke, an acute case of stomach flu. The doctor has recommended that the crown princess not travel to Chile as planned. It's too early to say whether she will be able to travel on Wednesday (23.01.07)."
On Monday (21.01.08), the crown princess and her husband hosted a fourth birthday party for their daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, at their royal Asker estate, Skaugum, near the country's capital, Oslo.
A palace insider told Norway's Aftenposten newspaper that several children at the princess' kindergarten had been struck down by the same bug, as well as a number of palace officials.
The couple's trip to Chile was to be the first Norwegian royal visit since King Olav visited in 1967.
Crown Prince Haakon left his wife in the capable hands of palace doctors, and travelled to the South American country yesterday afternoon.
