The monarch and his wife Queen Sofia were among the special guests at the stadium in Vienna, Austria, as they watched their national side beat Germany 1-0 in the final. Carlos, who was seen jumping in the air after Fernando Torres scored the winning goal, said: "We have suffered, but the final was worth it. We have been waiting for such happiness for some time. It all worked out well and it was very exciting. "This is a moment for all of us Spaniards to rejoice because this is a triumph for all." This is the first major championship trophy Spain have won since 1964. Royal protocol was dismissed as the Spanish goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas excitedly kissed Sofia and hugged a jubilant Carlos after lifting the Henri Delaunay Trophy. Carlos added: "Congratulations to all Spaniards. It is a moment to celebrate a magnificent triumph." Torres insists his country deserved the victory and revealed the team are looking forward to further success at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He said: "It is a dream come true, this was a great victory for the whole team and for the whole of Spain but we still have to be ambitious as we still have the World Cup to come." TAGS: Europe |
