The royal couple - who have been searching for a holiday home for some time - bought a property called Flatholmen, in an outlying area of the archipelago outside Risor.
The property consists of an island with a small summer house, a boathouse, piers and a private sandy beach.
The house was advertised for $1.6 million but royal officials wouldn't confirm how much Haakon and Mette-Marit.
The property is just a short boat ride from the centre of the town of Risor, a popularbut pricey summer magnet on the ‘Norwegian Riviera' of Sorlandet.
Although it's in a prime location, the house is in need of repair and the couple are set to renovate and expand it.
They are also building a winter cabin in the mountains of Buskerud.
