Over 300 guests were invited to the event at the London royal residence, which was held for previous winners of the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

Jill Coleman was honoured for her work for the Amazons Young Women's Project, which is run by trained counsellors for young girls with low self-esteem and anger management issues.

Afterwards she said: "She was very nice, very pleasant to talk to. It's a great privilege to be here."

Her teenage daughter added: "It's my first trip to London and I get to meet the queen! She was really nice."

The reception was also attended by the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent, along with British Cabinet Office minister Ed Miliband.
