Britain's Prince Philip left an engaged couple red-faced when he asked them, "How long have you two been at it?"

The Duke of Edinburgh - who is famous for his frequent blunders - was on a walkabout of the Mediterranean island of Malta with his wife Queen Elizabeth as part of the couple's diamond wedding anniversary celebrations when he was introduced to English holiday representative Lisa Cunningham and her Maltese fiancé Igy Bezzina.

Lisa told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "I think he was a bit tired and perhaps thought we'd been married for some time. I didn't really mind though, it was just nice to meet them both!"

Philip and the queen - who were married on November 20, 1947 - were meeting a number of newlyweds, engaged couples, and other married pairs celebrating their own wedding anniversaries staying on the island.

The royal couple lived sporadically on Malta in the early years of their married life together while the duke was completing his navy duties and they both have many fond memories of the island.

The pair will leave Malta for Uganda today (21.11.07), where Queen Elizabeth will open the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) on November 24 after a three-day state visit.

It will be the first time in 53 years that the queen has flown out to the African country, and the local people are very excited about their royal visitor.

One told the BBC: "We think it'll be good for the country, increase tourism, and we're proud of it. A visit by the queen is a very rare thing - a privilege."
