Britain's Prince Philip "adored" the late British comedian Les Dawson.

The prince bonded with the funny man - who died of a heart attack in 1993 aged 62 - over their shared love of black pudding, a traditional blood-based sausage dish popular in Dawson's home county of Lancashire.

Dawson's widow Tracy told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "Prince Philip adored Les. They had a great relationship.

"Les used to do a lot for Philip's charities. They had this running joke about black pudding and whether you should fry it or boil it."

Black pudding is traditionally made by cooking pig's blood until it is thick enough to congeal when cooled.

Dawson counted his performance in front of Prince Philip and his wife Queen Elizabeth at the 1991 Royal Variety Performance in London's Victoria Palace Theatre as one of the highlights of his career.

The Royal Variety Performance is an annual gala evening at which comedians and other entertainers perform before royalty and a television audience to raise money for charity.
