Mango, a Spanish fashion label once the fave of Singapore¡¯s women professionals, has lost its luster. The main reason could be the dumping of unwanted stock from the western countries to Singapore. Curiously, winter clothing was spotted in local retail shops, begging the question as to whom its customers are in consideration of the hot and humid weather in Singapore.

Currently, Marks and Spencer, a British fashion brand, may be heading in the exact same direction as Mango, displaying winter clothing in its retail shops as of press time. Clothes made of inferior cloth have also been spotted in Hong Kong label Giordano.

The common knowledge among Singaporeans is that in the society¡¯s dressed-down culture, women professionals are nonetheless savvy shoppers who are image-conscious. In the past five years, with loose threads hanging and stuck zips in clothing sold during the Great Singapore Sale, there has been a wave of online shopping of clothing from foreign countries by these same shoppers.

Is this heralding the ringing death knell of retail shopping in Singapore? Let¡¯s hope not.
