The joke going around 2004 to 2006 was that the Singapore government was using the word ¡°hub¡± to describe Singapore in virtually any field. And it was true. Read any media content on Singapore, and there were terms like educational ¡°hub¡±, biomedical ¡°hub¡± which Singapore aspired towards.

In 2006, in frustration, a foreign lecturer confronted a class of Singaporean students at the National University of Singapore, asking, ¡°Why must Singapore hub this, and hub that?¡± To which, there was no reply.

However, since 2007, foreign professionals have mellowed and even in interviews, have started referring to Singapore as a ¡°hub¡±. Not only stopping at that, many of these professionals have also contributed towards Singapore as a hub in certain industries such as the biomedical field.
