The Olympics - a world political force

The Olympics is a contest between countries as well as between athletes. A good result translates to a government supporting sporting heroes and therefore deserves your vote at the next election. It is also about pride, Olympic medals make everyone proud. People who are proud are likely to feel better about leaders who supported their heroes.

Ah spring, when a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love, and a middle-aged man’s fancy severely turns to thoughts of basketball. College basketball, that is. And I’m not talking about some kiss-your-sister contest like the NIT, I’m talking about the Big Dance, the NCAA Tournament.

You can try to convince me as much as you would like the 2007 Patriots are one of the best teams in sports history. They have arguably the best quarterback in football history, one of the best receiving cores ever, and the sickest mad scientist for a coach ever. I will disagree with the first one.

Not This Time Kenny

So Kenny took over the organization in 2001. He has been to the playoffs ONCE since then. Grant it, the Sox won the WS that year, but do the math. He went once in six years. 1/6=.2. Do know what .2 is? It’s 17%; a failing grade so roughly speaking Kenny Williams has failed as a GM.

In good old Miami, land of palm trees, beaches, and many wanna be Tony Montanas, a man by the name of Tim Hardaway thought it would be a great idea to tell America how much he hates gay people. He will not play with them, he will not hang out with them, and he won’t talk to them, not in a house, not with a mouse. He does not like gay people here or there, he doesn’t like them anywhere.

Just a few thoughts.....(April 2006)

Steroids, steroids, steroids. Ruining America's Pastime. Not like the good old days. Take the Mets of the 80's for instance. A bunch of good guys that played hard on and off the field. No matter how much cocaine they ingested or how many drinks they had, they were ready to go. These guys did it all. Bar fights, gang-bangs, arrests, even jerkin' off in the bullpen. Oh, by the way- they won two National League pennants and a World Series. And not one needle in the ass between them.

Biffle wins race, Busch win Nextel Cup

Going into the final race of the 2004 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series at the Homestead/Miami Speedway for the Ford 400, Kurt Busch was leading Jimmy Johnson by a slim 18 points and Jeff Gordon by 21 points. NASCAR changed from the old points system by giving the top ten drivers and those within 400 points of the leader a second chance. Basically tightening up the points by giving the top ten a five point difference from each position. The leader is given 5,050 points, second 5,045, third 5,040 and so on down the line to each qualifying driver. for the last 10 races of the season. The hops being a tighter finish to the season championship over past years where one driver could have a 900 point lead and no one having much of chance to catch them. The new format definately made an interesting final race.

In the wake of England crashing out at the quarterfinal stage at Euro 2004, the limelight is back on England captain David Beckham. Beckham missed a penalty in the earlier group stages against France, if he had scored, England would have stood a chance for a supposedly easier quarterfinal test against Greece. Later, he put a penalty horribly wide, in the the penalty shootout against Portugal (England lost 6-5).
