At least that’s what Merriam-Webster tells us. This year, 100 new words were added, but to say they are sophisticated, is a large overstatement.

Letting Go of Writer’s Guilt

In June, I wrote 20 pages of my new novel, finished two articles, and read books on writing technique. And the last few weeks? I have spent time with friends, went on walks, and caught up on old movies. When I mentioned this to a friend of mine, my voice all low and ashamed, she said, “C’mon, you deserve a break.” “Yeah, I guess,” I answered, knowing full well that if the tables were turned I would see the situation just as she did. In fact, when it comes to my friends, I am one of the first people to encourage time off and praise them for the work they have been doing. Yet, when it comes to myself, this is much harder to do. Why is it that we have no trouble cutting others slack but not ourselves? And, what can we do to make this guilt go away?

Spicing Up Your Freelance Career

Freelancing definitely has its perks—flexible hours, the ability to work from home, the opportunity to be creative. But, like with any job, you can burn out. The constant generation of ideas and the need to pitch can get difficult and even make those with the toughest skin weary. In these moments, you may want to call it quits.

However, before you do, try some of the ideas below. Taking your mind off the task at hand, while still working, can get you doing the pitching hustle again shortly.

Whenever I meet young writers, it always amazes me how much they know. And while I’m mostly impressed, part of me is jealous because I only learned in my late 20s what they already know as sophomores in college.

I am sure there are others like me (of all ages) who do not know what college courses might help them in their writing careers or what they can do before they graduate to get ahead of the pack. Of course, there are many directions one can take to get a jump start on freelancing, but these are a few I recently discovered.

While the fashion front has been lenient in creating room for more styles and accessories, the literary world often balks at changes in its lineup. A few weeks ago, I explored readers’ hesitancy in giving YA novels their due.

This week, I’d like to focus on books we see as classics. Why can pearls and the little black dress share space with dangly earrings and shiny gowns, but Charles Dickens and Jane Austen have to keep their distance from John Irving and Mary Gaitskill?

I still teach a few hours a day, create pitches, and work on articles, but all through this I have had this feeling that there is something else out there. Something more.
Coping with the Revise

Up until a few years ago, a revised piece meant that I had read it over twice and double-checked grammar and context. Blame it on my high school English teachers. Then, I began working on a novel and realized - wonder of wonders - that so much more is needed to make a creative work flow.

Those of you who have long mastered the art of revision may be smirking, but better to learn late than never, right? And on the chance that there are writers still out there that are stuck on how to revise—or those who have revision down to a science but are looking for new ways to approach this subject—I thought I would share some pearls (or cubic zirconia) of wisdom.

How to Beat—or at least pacify - writer’s block

Whether you are attempting to write the introductory paragraph to a non-fiction article or another chapter of your novel, there comes a time - no matter how prepared you are - that you are left staring at a blank screen. You can use this bout of writer’s block as an excuse to procrastinate on that book or article, but you will be the one who suffers in the end. This is not to say that getting those creative juices flowing again is easy, but I don’t believe it’s as hard as television or movies make it out to be. It’s not even as hard as we writers make it out to be. Below are some things you may have already heard, but this is what helps me put words on screen. And, if you don’t like them (or even if you do), please add what has worked for you in the comments section. We can always use more advice on beating this writing demon.

I am not saying you won’t make mistakes along the way - we all do - and it is part of the craft. We all have gotten very concerned with mechanics and technicalities and yes, they are an important part of writing. Too many writers, early in their career, can get so caught up in these two components as to deny themselves the permission to write.

New York Times Best-Selling Author Steve Alten Talks!

From a writing novice just seven short years ago to having his sixth novel published this summer; Steve Alten could easily be held up as the perfect example of how hard work breeds success.

In that time he has made the New York times best selling list as well as other best seller lists all around the world --not bad for a man who had never written any fiction before he attempted to write his first novel! At this moment in time, Steve is in the throes of courting Hollywood in the long and hard process of trying to get his first novel, Meg, turned into a movie! Here he tells us a little about how he is progressing...

OH. At the moment, you are working hard on getting your novel, Meg, turned into a movie. How have you found dealing with Hollywood studios and executives? Was it a case of they welcomed you with open arms or have you had to knock loudly on a lot of doors?

SA. Nothing had happened in regards to the Meg movie since Hollywood Pictures failed to renew the rights back in 1998. Since then, we had interest, but nothing with names that carried real weight...until Nick Nunziata, a friend, supporter, and the creator behind CHUD.com took interest in bringing the movie to his friend, Guillermo Del Toro, director of Hellboy. Guillermo loved Meg
