A good piece. I agree with you that the writing contests have recently become money spinning methods. Why should the advertiser ask for an entrance fee.

I remember: the British Council runs a short story contest every year and the entrance fee, they say is a modest Rs 100 (roughly $2.5) And fools like me take part in it.

Guess the number of entries received. Over one hundred thousand from all parts of the English speaking world. And the money collected is a million rupees and more. And they pay a pittance of Rs 20,000 for the winner. The rest goes to enrich the British council. Great!
