The part where the angle taken that the government issues the death penalty due to the detrimental effects of drug is not the only reason.
So too, the reason is not utiliteralism, though it's probably related.
The main reason, is the crime rate. Just think: Given that there is already the death penalty in Singapore,it is still not effective as a deterrent. If one takes a hard look at the figures of drug trafficking, in relation to the death penalty, what does one see? So, I ask, if the deterrent is reduced, what would happen then?To the crime rate, that is. And don't forget that drug trafficking is linked to sea routes and the port, and don't forget that the port is currently Singapore's rice bowl.
A single drug deal is worth millions in itself. And so, tell me, what does one want millions for? So then, if a person carries the drug, normally that person will get a very huge cut.
Pro-life is all very well, but if even the death penalty doesn't scare them, then what will? And when the port gets into serious trouble, who will account for that? Singapore is unlike Hong Kong, that has China for support. And USA has clearly stated that it will not help to patrol the waters, which is not the significance of the action not taken, but the significance behind the decision.
