If you think atheism is not declining it is, as somebody put it, because you are guilty of ethnocentrism. Atheism is still declining in Europe, although the rate of decline is slowing, but elaewhere in the world it is growing. As a worldwide phenomenon, religious belief is growing, overall, at atheism's expense.

Possibly Atheism seems to be in decline from certain vantages merely because most atheists really don't care to evangelise. No god, no point talking about it, I'm making a sandwich...

It might be a good thing to let religious fanatics think that atheism is declining.

Great article, which I picked up off the Council for Secular Humanism newsletter. It's good to know in these times when religios zealots seem to dominate American public life that non-believers aren't being cowed. However, I don't think one can equate "no religious affiliation" with atheism or even agnosticism. I have talked with a lot of people who are totally turned off by organized religion but who still claim belief in some superior being, even if it's not the father- in -heaven type. Consequently, I doubt that 16% of Americans would say that they believe there is no god.

Kudos on a great article! I think there is going to be secular backlash to misgivings of religion and the conservatives that are riding on its coattails. The problem with secularism at this time is doesn't have any vehicle(s) to use at this time.

The article omits that Robin Murray-O'Hair, Madalyn Murray O'hair's granddaughter and adopted daughter, was also murdered. Robin Murray-O'hair edited American Atheist magazine. She was 30.
