Scorsese may have been directing longer, but I think you'll find that both of them started doing quality work around the same time, the early 1970's. Scorsese deserved an award, but it's probably a decade or two late for what he deserved it for. I'm going along with what Chris Rock said about a rich guy not being so interesting.
