I totally agree that cheerleading is a sport. I've been doing it for years and it is so difficult. Especially when you're the flyer cause you're so light so your bases chuck you 20-30 ft in the air and your life is in their hands and you just have to keep smiling even though in your head you're thinking omg! I could die if this stunt goes wrong and they drop me. There is so much trust and i don't wanna make a scene but people really need to stop criticizing cheerleading and just accept that a sport means any exersion of physical activity. I looked it up. And just let me see you do my whole routine in 5 minutes. We practice evry day for 3 hours for an entire year. other sports only last a season. this is our life. I dare you to try my routine. Go on youtube and look at some videos there. There's lots there and they can prove to you how big a activity cheerleading really is. It takes so much time and energy and devotion and persistance. And I woud just like to point out that not just football players think that we(cheerladers) are not a sport. Even the emo freaks or the loners or even chess players. They all think that we're hoes in short skirts and all we do is party and watch what we eat and have sex with football players and we need to stop this rumour and show everyone what cheerleading is really all about. I agree with like everybody cheerleading is a sport. I have practices just as long as football five times a day and for 2 or 2 1/2 hours. We run a mile and go to the wait room. And we work just as hard or harder then other sports in my school just to gain respect from our peers. We have to work out to gain the muscle to throw a 100 person up in the air 20 feet. You don't need a ball for a sport. Swimming is a sport. There's no ball. Gymnastics and track wresting so why not cheerleading. I Just Started Cheering for a Competition Cheer Squad, there's a difference between that and high school cheer. High School Cheerleaders just stand around and yell they act omg! They aren't really "serious" about it.
Competition takes ALOT of strength, in other sports you lift weights well we lift people. In Competition you wear short skits in order to do stunts and jumps, you wear a little top so when you try and do a Backhand Spring or a Back Tuck your shirt doesn't go in your face. Cheer IS A SPORT! We can get hurt, and if your a backspot/base it's a possibility you can be kicked in the face, lets see you hold a handstand for a few minutes. So i think that high school cheerleaders are stupid and that's not a sport, but competition IS!

Cheerleading a sport? What makes a sport? A ball? nope, wrestling doesnt have a ball and its a sport. Sweat? Nope we sweat just as much or more during our practices. Practices, audiences? Nope, not that either. We practice 2 hours a day 4 days a week, 4 weeks a month and 12 months a year, and there is often more people attending a cheer comptition then a ball game. We tumble, jump, scream, cheer, stunt and more. Flyers have to have flexibility and strength, and bases need ot have strength to be able to lift flyers and throw them up more then 10-15 feet in the air. We also need to have strength to get our pikes toe touches herkies and more jumps high. Not to mention our tumbling. You thing its easy doing a back handspring? Why don't you tr yit. Not to mentin a back tuck! If you can't do a backbend kickover, not to mention just a backbend, good luck trying to do what we cheerleaders can do!

Okay, so I’ve been cheering for a long time now. I cheered on my varsity high school sideline team for all of high school. And I’m gonna have to say that I don’t think that part of cheerleading is a sport… don’t’ get me wrong. It’s difficult, and I think it largely depends on the high school in question to say how much effort goes in to it, and what skills are performed. But there are way too many high school teams out there that can barely get a girl up in to an extension and that only have one or two girls on the team that can tumble. And I’m not trying to diss anyone’s team or anything… I’m just saying hat if all you’re doing is yelling and kicking on the sideline in support of another sports team… that’s not exactly what I would call a sport…
BUT… competition cheerleading is entirely different. I was also on my school’s competition team as well as an all star team all throughout high school… and anyone who doesn’t view that as a sport is entirely ignorant. It involves constant and strenuous practice as well as being in shape in every aspect of fitness. Cheerleading involves every part of your body. Your abs have to be strong to jump high, legs and arms to lift people, endurance to make it through routines, coordination for dancing, flexibility in general, as well as shoulder strength and balance. And for those of you who say you don’t get points in cheerleading you’re wrong… it’s a judged sport just like gymnastics and ice skating or whatever else you guys want to compare it too.
As for stereotypes about cheerleaders… I mean every girls sports team is going to have people that gossip or try to show off… it’s high school… it happens. And there are plenty of girls that join just to get a certain reputation. But in my experience if you’re on a challenging enough team… those girls usually can’t hang, unless they actually have talent of course. And cheerleaders aren’t all dumb… I cheered and I got a scholarship to Virginia Tech, another girl on the squad is going to UVA… etc.
And for anyone that doesn’t believe competitive cheerleading is a sport… go to youtube and type in allstar cheerleading routine and see what comes up… then try to do half the stuff that you saw and maybe you will get the idea…

cheer really is a sport. i completely agree with all that the person below me (christa) said. its true. and they do work super hard and do a lot more. so. yah....and just because they wear short skirts means nothing. ever walk around in the summer? so many girls wear even shorter skirts. and atleast cheerleaders wear something under them. the stunts and moves they do are super difficult too. way more than drippling and passing a basketball around, or throwing and hitting a baseballl or softball. cheer takes soo soo much more. and a lot of body strength, cordination, practice, and concentration. not to mention talent and skills. so yes. cheer is a sport.

can any other sport organize sixteen of their "players" to do the exact same difficult move at the exact same time. i don't think so. perfect timing is what we have. Anyways nowadays the uniforms are required to have underarmour which looks better, the skirt allows freedom so we can move our legs to do the stunts. It is a time consuming Sport because we have practices just as long or maybe even longer as say basketball players or football. We don't use or throw a ball no, but we are the only athletes that throw other athletes. It really doesn't matter who thinks its not. It all comes down to what the cheerleader believes.

Most definatly cheerleading is a sport. More people get hurt in cheerleading then they do in any other sport. Not only that but you have to have alot of strength, plus u have to be really athletic. Every sport has a famous person associated with it (with maybe only 1 or 2 exceptions) Golf = Tiger Woods, Baseball = Babe Ruth, Ken Griffy, ect. (Hint: it's usually the guy they name the vidogames off of) Who can name a famous cheerleader?
Video games... name a decent cheerleading game... (one that actually gets coverage)
As mentioned before, sports involve direct competitions. When you compete for the best score, it's called a performance.
Ultimately, teh real question is this: Who cares?! Why are cheerleaders so obsessed with being a sport? Can't something that's not a sport be worthwhile too? Or are they offended by being grouped with the dance team, or the marching band, and the color guard?

Everyone who says that cheerleading is not a sport because there is no direct contact, that we just compete with ourselves is WRONG! according to the definition, cheerleading is a sport! there is nothing in the definition of a sport that says that there has to be direct contact for it to be a sport. When people say that all cheerleaders do is run around, throw our hands up in the air, and do our hair/makup, is WRONG! What if i said that volleyball isn't a sport because it just gives them an excuse to be on their knees all the time. or if i said that hockey wasn't a sport because all hockey is is people running around with sticks in their hands, and it's not a sport because fighting is allowed. what sport allows people to fight while playing that sport? ( i just wanted to prove a point that people say that cheer is just people waving their hands around, and people also have their views of other sports. the things i said about hockey and volleyball werent my opinion, i just said it to prove a point)
i just argued with one of my fellow classmates today about if cheerleading is a sport or not and he compared it to football. the discussion ended up not talking about wheather or not cheerleading is a sport or not, but if cheerleading was easier or harder than football. Sports in general are hard. just because football is harder than golf, doesnt make football a sport and golf not a sport. every sport takes alot of skill and practice, but just because you believe that one sport is harder than the other doesnt make one activity a sport and the other activity not a sport.
The whole argument about that juding thing and that cheerleading isnt a sport because it is someone's opinion is wrong. we dont get let's say 5 judges with cards that have 10, 9.5, and numbers liek that, we get scored on difficulty and its not just someones opinion, you get a certain amount of points for certain stunts or tumbling in the routine. its just liek in basketball when you throw a 3 pointer or a 2 pointer for different distances away from the basket. and in the definition of a sport is says that "obtaining results in competition at all levels." even if it is judged, you still get a result.
cheerleaders are not stupid! at least half of my squad is on high honors and we get certificates saying that we are "scholar athletes" and the other half of them are on honors. and if we are failing one class, we cant cheer for a game or practice, and if its really bad we cant compete.
there are 27 states, including mine, that recognize cheerleading as a sport. and more states are following the 27 that have already considered it a sport.
therefore, it is a sport especially by definition and in some states it is already a sport, so theres no argument there, you dont see people arguing if golf is a sport, because it is already recognized as one. so for the people who think its not a sport, in 27 (and growing) states, youre WRONG!!!

We are practicing 6 times a week and i still manage to earn a 3.75 and higher, and i know a lot of cheerleaders who have the same grades too. We arnt idiots!!! I’ve never before seen a group of comments so rife with spelling/ grammatical errors. You all sound so verbally challenged, like it is so hard for you to come up with a logical argument. I’m not sure if it is funny or just sad.
You can easily tell which comments are for “Cheerleading as a Sport” by how poorly the author uses the English language. Even the coaches seem to have a though time making much sense and writing above a 6th grade level. This despite the assumption that all of you have at least made it TO the high school level at some point. I especially love the comment about being on a High school team for six years? Wow, one would think those extra 2 years would have really helped you grasp some simple spelling skills.
In the end, who cares whether cheerleading is a “Sport”? What is really sad to me is how all of you got through Jr. high without learning how to say, write or think anything intelligent. Was your school experience just all about cheering, a superfluous pep activity to support some other superfluous pep activity. I agree sports are FUN and exercise IS good for you. However, learning how to spell and not sound like and idiot is also good for you, in fact that’s the REAL reason MOST people go to school.
Just think what you all might have accomplished with your lives if you hadn’t spent all those hours loosing brain cells trying “TO COME UP WITH STUNTS AND DO ALL THOSE FLIPS.” Think of where your lives might have taken you if you had spent those countless hours of practice actually learning something at school?

first of all, to the author of this document I would like to say that you have done a very poor job or research and you don't seem the least bit smart when you word things the way you did. Second of all. cheerleading is DEFINITLY a sport, i've been on a comp and a school squad for SIX YEARS! In tumbling I have my full, layout and tuck as well as front tuck, in my gym there are girls in gymnastics who can't even do that, yet gymnastics is in the olympics? I also base and fly. Each year my squad goes to 7 to 8 comps and to get to that level, we practice 6 days a week some days before & after school for 3 or 4 hours. I also keep my grades up and to all A's and am also the grade nine rerp for my school, if you dont see that as someone who is dedicated enough to be called an athlete, I think you may be crazy. I also run every day or chance I get for at least a mile or so, and you call us trash talkers? LOOK AT THE DOCUMENT YOU JUST WROTE, hmm sound familiar? You've proved nothing and basically embaressed yourself. PROPS. I would love to see you for one second try to do comp cheer, I would laugh in your face. and to the person above my comment, we compete MANY squads, not ourselves. Very poorly writen. However, cheerleading is the most dangerous sport and many ppl dont relize that. 88% of all highschool injuries are infact from cheerleading. it is even more dangerous than football. Ive been cheering since 2nd grade and im in 11th grade now and co-captin of my highschools varsity squad, ive been on competion sqauds where we practiced 6 days a week. 3 hours on weekdays and 5 hours on saturdays. We worked so hard just to get 3 place. (however there were 100 teams competeing so i guess thats pretty good.) Just becouse cheering isnt 1 on 1 competion that dosent mean its not a sport.(basketball players have 5 ppl agenst 5.When we compete we have specific giudlines we have to follow. We have to do a certian amount of gymnastics, (and gymnastics is in the olympics)a certain dificulty level of stunts and manuvers, we have to all these giudlines we have to follow and we are all judged on the same thing. I am doing a paper on the reasons cheerleading is a sport, i tried to use this site, but its not going to help because half of your reasons are bogus... have u thought of how hard we all work, how our practices are just as long if not longer then any other sport, and have you thought of our dedication, u say nothing about any of this in ur site, u talk about popularity, that doesnt make it a sport, u talk about partying wtf.. this site is bogus and u dont give any good reasons, work on the reseach lady

Listen, I bet all the other athletes out there would agree with me. Cheerleading is DEFINITELY not a sport. I don't know one cheerleader that could run sprint drills like the football players, have all day tournaments like the volleyball girls, or even finish 1 mile like the cross country kids. Listen, I have NEVER seen a sweaty cheerleader. They have no idea what it's like to finish a 2 mile race with competitive girls that can run under 13:00 minutes or sprint until the lungs inside your chest feel like they'll explode when you're running for a touchdown. Please, spare me the dramatics and get over yourselves; cheerleading is hardly ever physical, let alone a sport.

I am a coach of a high school and competion squad in the midwest. Obviously many of you have never really been exposed to real cheerleading. Not only do you not realize why we are required to wear tight or short clothing but you also do not realize that squads in our town are not selected by name. We have very high standards for our team and they practice 10 months out of the year. I know that I am probably rambling on but many times the student body in our hometown does not realize what it takes to be a cheerleader today. I am sorry for the writer of this article. She obviously had been on a very unsuccessful squad to have not enjoyed it, but don't believe that it is the same for every team.
To answer a few misconceptions in your comments: Tight shirts- have you every tried to catch a double full or basket toss with loose fitting clothing. IT IS DANGEROUS!
Short skirts - Have you every tried to tumble or jump in a long or full skirt. IT WON'T WORK!
Competing against yourself - Get your info straight. Have you every been to regional or nationals. I doubt it!
Stereotypes - Maybe in your town but don't try to talk that way about any of my squad. They were selected by college cheerleaders who had never met them before.
Furthermore, I am a Coach and not a sponsor as many of you would want to believe. I have coached my team for over 6 years and am very proud of their hard work and dedication. We have taken home many trophies from local and national levels. Oh and by the way. last year we had two young men join our competion squad, one of which was the quarterback of our football team. He basically did it on a whim and was overcome with the degree of difficulty and athleticism that it took. By the way, he was recruited by the University of Nebraska.
For those of you who still believe that cheerleading is not a sport, then I feel sorry for your hometown squad who obviously do not have a coach but a sponsor who gives you this impression of cheerleading. For those of you who still have questions regarding real cheerleading, BRING IT ON!!!

Cheerleaders compete just like the football, basketball, and baseball team. Women always have to fight for what they believe in so why should this be any different. Sport involves direct conflict between the athletes, and in cheer, it's simply by judges. TV competitions? hahaha, just like the dog show, but is that a sport? nope, just a competition, where the judges decide everything.

Cheering is not a sport. I don't care what you say. In sports, someone has to keep score. Girls just cheer because they like jumping around and yelling for the team or because they're not good at anything else. When I stand in the crowd and cheer on a team nobody gives my a trophy or congratulates me on the good effort. Because it is not a sport. Sports involves at least two people, competing directly towards a common goal. One person has the opportunity to defend or alter the other persons offensive maneuvers. THAT''S A SPORT.
