A British man lost his girlfriend's engagement ring after putting it into a balloon which was carried away by a strong wind.

Lefkos Hajji, 28, from London, had asked his florist to put the 6,000 diamond engagement ring in a helium balloon but when he left the store, a gust of wind blew it away.

He said: "I couldn't believe it. I just watched as it went further into the air. I felt like such a idiot. It cost a fortune and I knew my girlfriend would kill me."

After chasing the balloon in his car for two hours, Hajji eventually gave up.

He said when he told his 26-year-old girlfriend Leanne, she went "absolutely mad", adding: "She's refusing to speak to me until I get her a new ring."
