A British lorry driver was stunned to discover he'd made a 100-mile trip with a live chicken under his bonnet.

The man only realised the hen was there when he heard it clucking upon his arrival at a supermarket depot near Chepstow, Monmouthshire.

The bird, now nicknamed Paxo, had been sitting on his engine since he left Staffordshire.

Transport clerk Alex Viljoen said: "The driver was afraid to pick the bird up. She was a bit warm and there was oil on her feathers, but she seemed quite happy."

Paxo was taken to vet Caroline Marlow and given a clean bill of health - then laid an egg.

Caroline said: "We think she was copying 'Chicken Run' and trying to escape."
