88-year-old Faustino Olivera was struck by a rifle shot during the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and doctors failed to notice the bullet which had been lodged in his left shoulder.

Then, last week, Olivera was rushed to hospital after awaking with a painful bulge on his left side.

Doctors decided to operate and extracted the bullet, which a source described as "curved and pointy like the boot of one of Santa's elves". The ex-soldier said: "I had my suspicions - there was only one hole, but doctors said it was nothing." Olivera has now given the bullet to his nephew as a souvenir.
