A British girl's cinema date with her pet chipmunk ended in tears after the pet escaped.

Sarah Stoke, five, thought her furry friend would love to see new cartoon film 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' and snuck the pet into the movie theatre. But Sarah - who was with her grandmother - was left distraught after chipmunk Hamish ran away under hundreds of seats.

However, the girl was too scared to raise the alarm and it wasn't until three days later that her family noticed Hamish was missing and contacted the cinema.

Staff at the venue found Hamish behind the screen and reunited him with his owners.

He is now back in his cage but Sarah is "under threat of death" from her big sister if she ever touches him again.
