The mother of a US astronaut serving on the International Space Station was killed in a car accident near Chicago, local media reported Thursday.
Rose Tani, mother of astronaut Daniel Tani, died when her car was struck by a freight train in a railroad crossing in Lombard, Illinois, the Chicago Tribune reported. She had tried to pass a bus that was stopped at the crossing.
NASA called Daniel Tani, 46, aboard the ISS to deliver the news.
He arrived at the ISS on an October space shuttle flight and was due to return to Earth aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis this month, but that that flight has been delayed until at least January 10.
