Don’t Believe the Hype: Pot Smoking is a Personal Choice

It’s me, that crazy hippie chick from Alaska, back once again to defend the lives, love, and personal liberties of pot smokers everywhere. I know it’s been awhile, but ya’ll have to excuse me, being a full time college student, social worker, and women’s rights activists takes up a lot of time. Despite the time between this article and the last, the issue is still the same. The American public is sorely misinformed by a dictatorship that calls itself democracy on the issue of marijuana smoking.

As President Bush likes to remind us, America was founded on the concepts of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Except, his actions are this: the United States government will define what liberty is and local government will tell us the boundaries of our pursuits for happiness. Oh sure, some of you are sitting there calling me something derogatory and saying that my ideas of the insane rantings of a pot smoking degenerate. But then again, I’m betting that most of you agree with me.

In the beginning, pot wasn’t made illegal because of the fact that it was some evil drug. Marijuana was made illegal in this country because of racism and greed.

In the 1930’s, the Henry Ashlinger and the Federal Bureau of Narcotics worked to make marijuana illegal by focusing on the themes of racism and violence. This was done because of the influx of cheap immagrant labor and its impact on white jobs during the Depression. According the United States government, marijuana had to be illegal because of its affects on degenerate races. Here’s what Henry had to say about his fellow American citizens.

“Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men.”

"Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing"

There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others."

The more current version of these comments includes not only minorities, but whites who are in lower socioeconomic brackets. Talk about social control through stigmatation.

And my personal favorite goes to..

‘Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind."

All those who know this last comment is complete and utter bullshit, raise your hand. Despite what most people think—pot doesn’t make you violent. And it certainly doesn’t alter human nature, as media rhetoric would like us to believe. Pot smokers I know are far from violent. Oh sure, they might fight you for that last Twinkie—but that’s about it. But alas, it is just one more stereotype that honest hard working smokers everywhere have to live with.

But wait! How is that pot smokers are both lazy and violent? I would think that being one contradicts being the other.

[BB]

Think about it if marijuana is totally made illegal—do you really think an unhappy workforce is going to be half as productive. I’m thinking NO. My point is we are told that as adults, we have the power to change the world, raise future generations, and build communities on the moon someday, but yet our government is telling us that we don't have the sense to make the right choices for ourself. Ain't that the damnest thing! Chrsit people, how many phases of social control do we have to give into until we get tired of all the bullshit. I think its high time that we stood up and introduced America to another role of nornality--not just the one that the conservative community has graciously defined for us.

It is my opinion that nobody has been given the right to judge anybody else. America claims to be a Christian nation. With that said, I am reminded of a Matthew: 7:1-5. “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”

People are always scared of what they don’t know about. Come on people, educate yourselves. How much freedom do we have to lose before we fight back? What personal liberty do you have to loose before you get off your ass and say that enough is enough.

The point to all this is this: before all you anti-pot-anti-choice-anti-freedom people wag your finger and preach at me about how my pot smoking is deviant behavior —do your research. And before you go quoting some study, know that I have B.A. in Social Science and am well aware that research can be skewed to fit anybodies opinion. Example: medicating children is a good thing.

Smoking Marijuana should be seen for what it really is: An informed adult decision. Notice that I said that it was an adult decision, anyone who is eighteen and over should have the privilege of making up their own minds. Hey, if eighteen year olds are fighting a war, than they ought to have the choice to smoke pot—or not. I say legalize, tax and monitor it like we do alcohol.

Life is too short to be treated like a criminal. I’m sick of being told that pot smoking is criminal behavior. I’m sick of uneducated, not to mention, misinformed people telling me that I’m a bad person for being a pot smoker. Most of all, I’m tired of having to defend myself against invalid sterotypes that are pushed on the public by a both a biased goverment and a one sided media.

Don’t you just hate it when pot smokers succeed at higher education.

Until next time…smoke responsibly.

While pot is absolutely not a dangerous drug, it doesn't matter. Our government will continue to dictate life and happiness until the end of time. They will never, and don't want, to understand. They're greedy little pricks who just don't give a shit about anything except money. That's the way it is now and how it always will be. I know, I'm being defeatist, but come on; when has anything really ever changed.

Please use your spell checker when you are proclaiming to the world that you are educated! Having been a smoker for 30 years, I agree with what you said. If people don't stand up and read the constitution, there will be no one left except the filthy rich and the starving poor.
You are right about the age limit and the taxation of smoking. I read a stat once that said, "If marijuana was legalized and taxed; there would be no more welfare or sales tax on food."
There is a real concern about ovI think NO ONE can learn while smoking, in or out of class, smoking can create a false sense of well being and complacence that prevents many from moving their lives beyond menial labor. Of course, pee tests, which are un-constitutional, keep folks stuck in the

I can't really say to much seeing I am 17, but all of these things you say are true. Like others I prefer pot over other things and don't like to drink. God made this beautiful plant and nothing is going to change that. Honestly I don't smoke pot to get "high" I smoke pot to smoke pot, it is somthing to do, and I don't have to worry about bullshit and drama that everyone talks about. My mother is 37 years old and she has 3 kids. My bro and sis are both toddlers. She goes to work everyday takes care of them perfectly fine and she smokes pot everyday. But the government and non "pot smokers" say that we are ruining our bodies and will never grow up to do anything but sit around be a failure? How are we ruining our lives if we like to smoke? We are making ourselves feel better and thats all that matters. We don't need anyone elses opinions about shit. Get the facts straight before trying to brainwash the youth with t.v commercials and ads. Sure 1 person might become lazy and not do anything but everyone is an individual so don't judge the smoker nation for 1 fool who decided to lay around thier whole life.

Holly,
what you wrote makes alot of sense I am not realy a "pot smoker" myself, but I agree that people have the right to make their own decions no one should play God and judge otheres on what they should and should not do. Most people who judge alot realy donot have a real understanding of what life realy is in the first place, all their doing is acting off of what society has told them to follow on what is right and wrong. If you can understand this you can see that they don't realy have a real oppinion they are just followers. God did not create life one way he loved us enough to give us the option to choose anyway we pleased, many people do not know this because we were born into a race of rules and punishments.

AlterEgo says on 2006-02-17 11:53:00 about does it matter?
I smoke pot everyday. I do a little wake and bake, sometimes smoke at lunch alot of times after work. And yet I work approximately 65 hours a week. I work 40 on my regural job, and 25 and sometimes 30 on my own business, and I make good money. (about 80k/yr). I was/(kinda am still) very antisocial and didn't make a single friend after coming to the states when I was 10. But then I didn't smoke pot. I do now and I am slowly getting better and have started to make friends and go out more often. I would contribute that to pot and occasional ecstacy. Nothing else. Now for me both are always easy to get, but can you imagine if it was legal and doctors could prescribe either? Can you imagine how many more lives could be better? Forget about what your local representative or congressman or president told you. If one ecstacy pill can kill you I should be dead 50 times already. As for alcohol, I hate alcohol. But you don't see me with picket signs trying to make it illegal. And that shit really kills I see accidents all the time. Don't you? And really....what difference does it make to anyone that doesn't use them anyway? Your'e just forcing your opinion on someone else. And that may be fun now but eventually someone is gonna force their opinions on you and that's not gonna be nearly half as much fun.
