A Letter

Damayanti surprised her husband. She expressed her willingness to abort her child!

 

Damayanti came to this house when her parents forced her to stop education and step into married life. At the time she got married to Muralee, the eighteen year old boy from the next village, she was just fifteen years old. Now she was nineteen, the mother of two girls and expecting another.

 

When she got pregnant for the third time, she was literally warned by her in-laws that they didnt want another girl child. They needed a boy who would become the pride of their family. They even threatened to ruin the life of Damayanti and her daughters if she didnt comply.

 

She was scared but had full faith in her husband. She knew Muralee would support her in every situation. During her last six months she was so tortured by her in-laws that it led her to the doctor for a sex checkup of her child. The doctor confirmed it was a baby girl.

 

Now, Damayanti couldnt make up her mind. The in-laws will ruin her life. Compounding her dilemma was their financial condition; their situation wasnt good they could hardly provide adequate food, education or health measures to their children they already had. She gave hard consideration and after crossing that mountain of thoughts, she decided.

 

And her decision took Muralee by surprise. Although Muralee was an uneducated laborer, he could understand his wifes sentiments. He knew that it wasnt possible to force Damayanti to change her mind, so he told her that, although he was not happy with her decision, he would stand by her. Damayanti stood strong her decision, but she also wasnt happy. How could she be when it was her own child that she wanted to kill?  But she felt helpless.

 

A few days passed by.  Then one day, she received a letter addressed to her. She opened it and as she read, her eyes were full of tears. She couldnt control herself; the letter was completely wet with tears.

 

That night, she told her husband she changed her mind. Now she will deliver the child. Muralee couldnt have been more delighted; it seemed like he was the happiest person on earth. After exchanging a few emotional words, he wanted to know what made her change the decision. Damayanti showed him the letter.

 

 

MY DEAR MAMA,

 

                   I  LOVE YOU.  YOUR LITTLE GIRL IS FINE HERE, INSIDE YOUR STOMACH. AS YOU KNOW VERY WELL, I AM NOW CAPABLE OF LISTENING.  AND JUST  LAST WEEK  I HEARD  SOMETHING  STRANGE  THAT I  COULDN'T BELIEVE.  THATS WHAT FORCED ME TO WRITE THIS LETTER.  I WAS REALLY  HORRIFIED  AND  SCARED WHEN  I HEARD  THAT YOU  DIDN'T  WANT ME  TO BE BORN!

MAMA, PLEASE PLEASE DONT LISTEN TO THEM.  I WANT  TO  SEE THIS  WORLD..PLEASE  DONT  KILL  ME.

 

MAMA   I PROMISE   I WONT INCREASE YOUR BUDGET.  I WONT DEMAND NEW FROCKS OR DOLLS. I WILL  MANAGE  WITH  THE OLD  TOYS  AND  TORN  FROCKS  THAT  MY  ELDER  SISTERS  DONT  LIKE. I WILL  DO  ALL THE  WORK  FOR  YOU - I WILL  WASH  DISHES, CLEAN  THE  FLOOR  AND  WILL COOK  FOR  YOU  ALL  TOO. I WILL LISTEN TO YOU ALL AND NEVER MISBEHAVE.  I WILL  DO EVERYTHING  BUT  PLEASE.LET  ME BE  BORN  MAMA;  I DONT  WANT  TO  DIE.

 

MAMA,  IF  I WERE  A BOY,  WOULD  YOU  HAVE  DONE  THE  SAME THING? IF NOT, WHY ME? MAMA, I WILL  PROVE  MY SELF  BETTER  THAN  BOYS, PLEASE GIVE  ME A  CHANCE.

 

MAMA, RIGHT NOW MY HANDS ARE VERY WEAK.  I CANT  EVEN  HOLD  YOUR  HAND IN PROTEST  WHEN  YOU CONSUME  THOSE  MEDICINES  TO  KILL  ME !  YOU KNOW  MAMA,  THOSE  MEDICINES  ARE VERY  STRONG,  THEY  WILL  SMASH  ALL  MY  BONES  INTO  POWDER!  IT WILL BE PAINFUL MAMA

 

I PLEAD WITH YOU MAMA, DONT DO THIS TO ME!  I  WANt to SEE THIS WORLD, PLEASE.DONT KILL ME.

 

I  REQUEST  YOU  MAMAPLEASEI  DONT  WANT  TO  DIEI WANT  TO  LIVE.  HELP ME MAMASAVE MEPLEASE.
