To my first instinct, loneliness sucks big time. It is an empty feeling that grips me when I feel all alone in the world. In fact, I wrote this statement upon pondering over my past "relationships"-
Loneliness grasps me, and I wonder-
Should I search for partnership?
A potential mistake, which every woman commits,
Exchanging their bodies for love.
And in the end?
Nothing.
Back to where we were.
Yet, upon pondering again, perhaps loneliness might not be such a bad thing after all. You see, Man is by nature selfish and self-interested. Many people do things for money, for power, for acknowledgement . . . The list goes on. Yet people do things because of loneliness as well.
The elusive search for companionship, for love and to expand one's social circle - all this is linked to loneliness. There are many people in the world who call chat-lines, go on dating services, or join social activities - the desire to be part of a group. To be loved. To belong. To be accepted.
A bad thing? If everybody in the world were to do things for themselves, can you imagine what would happen? Thus loneliness can overcome selfishness. Of course, it can be argued that the desire to cease one's loneliness is from one's selfishness as well. Perhaps it's a thesis and an antithesis. Yet, the truth remains - loneliness can battle selfishness. An oxymoron: loneliness stems from and counters selfishness. There you have it.
So next time you feel lonely, don't beat yourself up over it. Think of it as an incentive to overcome your selfish desires. You'll feel better about it.

Really interesting, Crys.. I'm sure most women can identify with what you felt in the poem!
Some comments: As the anonymous guy said above, better approached from a theoretical pov rather than addressing people who are lonely. It's not particularly helpful to be told "It's good for character building." when you're dying for someone to care, to listen, to understand. And people have died for loneliness. People need other people. Preaching doesn't help any. :)

mmm....interesting thesis. heh. :P
But since this is a "rationalisation", then it's debatable, as well.
Perhaps a way to write even better is subtly bring your experiences into it, such that the audience can relate. Without sounding whiny or complaining or self-indulgent, but just to prove a point.
Thought this idea could be brought across in a more graceful, witty, less in-your-face way, though. heh. It's a matter of tone. It sounds abit like a witty journalist-wannabe.
heh oops, er, until perhaps i read sumiki tan again and notice a similarity in styles.;P
Anyway, back to rationalisation. Such a topic can be worth doing a few pages long thesis on.
I am not sure whether the desire for companionship necessarily equates loneliness exactly. The desire to make friends simply to counter loneliness might not be the most, desirable way of relating to people. If loneliness causes one to call chatlines and to become desperate for companionship in other ways, such as sleeping around or something, is that still good?
Why do you say loneliness stems from selfishness? The desire to fight loneliness by deliberately being nice to others might not speak of pure altruism, obviously, but loneliness itself is not caused by selfishness..
Being well-connected with people is also a way for one to take advantage of his network and make it work for himself. It is not necessary that one with a wider social circle of friends is less selfish than one who is "lonely" or alone.
heh i find the last piece of advice unconsoling and purely self-delusive. heh, oops, i don't easily buy an argument.:P
Perhaps if put in such a way as, man's desire for companionship often results in feelings of loneliness, especially when they feel unloved or not understood. No man is an island and we are all made to desire company. Hence, loneliness is not necessarily a negative thing, but is merely part of who we are. And it is in the attempts to fight these moments of anguish, and to connect with people in order to love and to be loved, that makes the world that we know of a much better and warmer place to be in. Do not be ashamed of your loneliness. Many people out there feel the same, and you never know, friends might be more than ready to be the healer and comforter of your loneliness if only they knew. Loneliness speaks of you being human , and is what prompts to you get out of your shell, and to discover yourself through invaluable friendships formed with others.
heh maybe this sounds more academic than article-like.:P juz my humble opinion.
