This Millennial Echo-Boomer takes a different stance than most in his generation when it comes to politics and our role of government. The Pew Research Center reported that since 2008, "the proportion of Millennial [Echo-Boomers] who identify or lean democratic has fallen from 62% . . . as a whole to 54%. The portion that leans Republican has bounced up from 30% in 2008 to 40%."
This is a good trend, as Obama offered change, but has not delivered. We live in era of recession, and my generation is experiencing one of its first economic hardships: it took me almost two years--after being laid of from a job--to find one that pays a living wage. However, even with my new job, I am still may overqualified for my position. I have much experience working with at-risk youth, and it's my chosen field of study. Before this job, I had taken a job that s aid 7.25 an hour, and after my financial situation changed in early 2010 from bad to worse--I decided to move to Texas from Kentucky, where I felt there was more opportunity for success and restarting my career.
Turns out, I was correct--granted I think I am way over qualified for the current position I am working. Of course, there are many benefits--I have opportunity for advancement. I am able to retire at the age of 48; I have opportunity to work on another degree while I am finishing my degree with Eastern Kentucky University online; and I also have the opportunity to pursue Graduate school in the next couple of years.
The recession has been tough for my generation: I never thought President Obama really reflected my views. I don't believe in big government, the nanny state, big brother, nor do I condone or support any kind of socialism, including Obamacare. I want a government that is fiscally conservative and responsible; I want a government that is going to do something to create jobs, and cut taxes. I also would prefer a First Lady that doesn't tell me what I should be eating--I am quite positive there are more important issues at hand--such as lowering the unemployment rate.
When it comes to the economy, immigration, and national security--I tend to take a hard conservative line. When it comes to social issues such as gay rights, I am more socially liberal. I'm not about to waste my time arguing over the definition of a word: civil unions are a good compromise. The government and people should mind there own business anyway, and should not care who's sleeping with who--it's no ones business. There are more important issues to be discussing.
The first issue is fixing the economy, and making the current federal government smaller. However, this does not mean that we should not work in helping the impoverished communities, or working on community development to help stem youth crime. The Federal and State government should provide grants, if it's financially able to do so. The Federal Government needs to cut spending and balance the budget.
I want change that represents smaller government, lower taxes, and freer market. The Tea Party represents my view and outlook on society. It's a non-patrician organization. This is perfect for the Millennial Echo-Boomers, of whom are more independent when it comes to politics. As the Pew Research center reported that "the plurality of young people are independents." My generation does not identify with any specific party.
I think when it comes to voting this election--we need to be anti-establishment and youthfully rebellious. We need to vote candidates in that will work for us, and revolutionize the future. The Tea party is the best option for this--You don't need to identify with either party, but you can vote on the issues of fixing the Economy and focusing on job creation. This Generation is capable of making informed decisions, as we are of the most educated and most populous generations, thus far.
Fight the power! Fight the establishment to get the change you want--a financially stable America, whose government operates with in the confines of its founding documents.
