Young star Saoirse Ronan, who played scheming sister Briony in Joe Wright's period movie, has been nominated for the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama award - despite never having acted in a feature film before.

Wright is set to battle Ridley Scott and Tim Burton in the Best Director category.

Denzel Washington's second directorial effort 'The Great Debaters' will compete against 'Atonement' for the Best Drama Picture accolade, alongside 'American Gangster', 'Eastern Promises' and 'Michael Clayton'.

'Michael Clayton' has three other nominations, including George Clooney for Best Drama Actor, Tilda Swinton in the Best Supporting Actress category and Tom Wilkinson for Best Supporting Actor

Cate Blanchett has two nominations - Best Drama Actress for 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' and Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Bob Dylan in 'I'm Not There'.

In the TV section, troubled actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been nominated for Best Actor in a TV Drama for his role as British monarch Henry VIII in 'The Tudors'.

Minnie Driver has been nominated for the Best Actress in a TV Drama for her role in 'The Riches' alongside fellow British star Eddie Izzard.

The winners will be announced at the gala ceremony on January 13 in Beverly Hills.
