Unknown to many Alan Dean Foster, the author of the classic sci-fi
thrillers Alien, Aliens and Alien3, also created a rare masterpiece
with his 'Spellsinger' novels. These books may sound crazy and I guess
they are a little, but you would do well to remember that it's Alan
Dean Foster were talking about, and for all his craziness there is a
shrewd mind at work there. Spellsinger is unique, charming, fascinating
and very, very funny.
Jonathan Thomas Meriweather, student of
history at the University of California, wonders what his friend Shelly
laced the weed with as he is confronted by a foulmouthed, five and a
half foot otter wearing pantaloons and a feathered cap.
It
seems he has materialized directly in front of Mudge, bonafide
adventurer, swindler and sex-fiend. Mudge takes him to the local wizard
Clothahump (a senile turtle), who informs them that Jon Tom is not
dreaming but is in fact the result of a transference spell.
Clothahumps
spell was meant to deliver someone who could defend them from the
Plated Folk and the evil emanating from the dreaded Greendowns. This
champion was to be a magician of Earth an engineer, but something had
gone seriously wrong
I don't think amateur electric guitar
qualifies me, either. I also work part time as a janitor atwait a
minute now. Jon Tom looked worried. My official title is sanitation
engineer.
Clothahump let out a grown of despair, sank back on the couch. So ends civilization.
In
a bungled effort to send him home, the beautiful Flores Quintera is
transferred across space and time from his own University. But to Jon
Toms dismay Flores falls for Caspar di Lorca, a gentleman rabbit,
rather than him.
Unloved and trapped in a dangerous and
strange world, everything seems hopeless to Jon Tom until he picks up a
duar and strums out a few chords. The resulting effect reveals that he
does possess a magic of sorts. Not the magic of an engineer, but a very
real and unpredictable magic that is powerful beyond reason.
Thus the Spellsinger is born.
From
AC/DC and Jimmy Hendrix, to Johnny Cash and Ozzy Osbourne, Jon Tom
plays whatever comes to mind from his repertoire of rock songs. To most
it sounds horrible, but when a moment of panic and peril is upon them
he consistently saves the day, even if it is in an unorthodox fashion
most of the time.

Under the guidance and tutelage of
Clothahump, Jon Tom and the ever-faithful Mudge share in adventures
that span six hilarious novels. Throughout the series there are scores
of unforgettable characters that include cannibal muskrats, warlike
prairie dogs, Captain Corroboc the ruthless parrot/pirate with a wooden
leg and an eye patch, and Colin, a saber-wielding koala.
While this makes for interesting imagery, there is nothing comical
about cute, furry animals hacking each-others limbs off. This is
serious stuff. But we love the carnage don't we?
Definitely not for the kiddies!
And for all of you big kids who dont mind a little colorful language,
theres definitely something priceless about a five-foot otter with a
dirty mouth and a penchant for booze and brothels.
It's
captivating, fun, and well written. You have to be careful reading it
in public as from time to time youll find yourself chuckling madly. But
the characters are so endearing that you forget their oversized talking
animals. More to the point it just doesnt matter.
Ultimately
our hero finds love and friendship, and when a chance comes for Jon Tom
to return home he discovers he is already there.
Soldier and crusader, fighting with sword and song, he is the SPELLSINGER.
And don't miss Son of Spellsinger:
Jon-Toms
son Buncan (also known as Spellmaster Jr.) and Mudges kids, otters
Nocter and Squill want to be questing heroes like their dads. But their
magic is a little different; its based on hip-hop! With the help of a
drunken rhino they set out on their own epic adventure, in search of a
dangerous legend
