Gp A: Portugal (Ronaldo 90) 1-2 Greece (Karagounis 7, Bassinas pen51)
Hosts suffer against a Rehagel-inspired, highly-organised Greek side. Man of the Match Dellas led the defence in stifling Figo, Pauleta and co. Portugal only really threatened when Christian Ronaldo came on. However, his final balls were disappointing.

Gp A Spain (Valeron 60) 1-0 Russia
Super-sub Valeron scores the decisive goal, but Spain always looked the more likely to score. Russia rarely threatened whereas the Iberian wingers, Exteberria and Man of the Match Vicente controlled the game.

Gp. B Switzerland 0-0 Croatia
Even with 10 men Switzerland looked the better team, but they lacked the necessary bite in attack against an ordinary Croatia side. Haas (M.o.M.) led the defence well, controlling the limited Croatian sorties. Vogel sent off for two yellow card offences.

Gp. B France (Zidane 90, 90pen) 2-1 England (Lampard 38)
England, giving a rare assured defensive display, lose out to Zidane in injury time. Despite a Lampard header and a Beckham penalty miss, Zizou kept Les Bleus battling to the end. A whole country mourns as if they have just found a penny but lost a pound.

Gp. C Italy 0-0 Denmark
Below-par Italian performance while the Danes continued a scoreless streak. Sorensen and Buffon, the goalkeepers, ensured the no-score draw with some excellent saves. Not a match to write home about, but the Italian defence looked as tight as it always does.

Gp. C Sweden (Ljungberg 32, Larsson 57, 58, Ibrahimovic 78pen, Allback 90) 5-0 Bulgaria
Larsson, on his competitive international return, inspired a solid, skillful Swedish side against lacklustre opponents. A team to watch out for, thats for sure. Bulgaria will be planning their holidays now.
Handy beer talk one word review: Larsson
Gp. D Czech Republic (Baros 73, Heinz 85) 2-1 Latvia (Verpakovskis 45)
Countless opportunities for the Czechs to score just wouldnt go in, leading Latvia to go in at half-time with a shocking lead. Constant pressure paid off for the Czechs in the end, with Nedved influential and Baros, the deadly frontman.
Handy beer talk one word review: Wasteful
Gp. D Germany (Frings 30) 1-1 Netherlands (Van Nistelrooy 81)
As you would expect, despite media reassurances to the contrary, Germany didnt actually look too bad. And even game highlighted by Frings freaky free-kick and Van Nistelrooys skillful finish. Nothing of note to suggest - either team are potential champions.
