The brain behind TV series such as Scandal and Grey's Anatomy has decided to leave ABC Studios after 15 years and join forces with Netflix. She has just signed a multi-year production deal with the streaming company.

Ted Sarandos from Netflix said that "Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I've gotten the chance to know Shonda and she's a true Netflixer at heart - she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We're so excited to welcome her to Netflix."

While the details of her new contract have not been disclosed, according to estimations she used to earn roughly $10 million a year with ABC Studios.

One of the reasons Rhimes moved to Netflix might be the flexibility its subscription environment provides, such as freedom to produce shows with various episode lengths and more freedom with series in general.

Shonda Rhimes could be considered one of the most successful TV producers of the past decade. She's behind TV series such as Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, Private Practice. She's also been involved with The Catch, How to Get Away With Murder, Off the Map.

"A lot of people dream. And while they are busy dreaming, the really happy people, the really successful people, the really interesting, powerful, engaged people? Are busy doing. I wanted to be Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison. That was my dream. I blue-skied it like crazy. I dreamed and dreamed. And while I was dreaming I was living in my sister's basement. Dreamers often end up living in the basement of relatives." -- Shonda Rhimes
