At least 20 people were killed when the Paris Opera Hotel (in Paris) caught fire. The only way out of the six-storey 32 room hotel was by the stairwell which was thick with smoke and flames. People were jumping from windows to escape the flames.  Of the 20 killed, at least half of them were children. Another 53 people were injured.  Some of them came from different parts of Europe but the majority staying at the hotel were needy families from Africa.

The hotel was originally built to accommodate 61 people, but 90 were staying there at the time of the fire.
